October 27, 2014: Andhra Pradesh (AP) goes LED. The state has taken up energy conservation under the Demand Side Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) on a massive scale, and has decided to go LED. The project, which will, later, be adopted in the whole state, has started off in Guntur district, where 20 lakh LED bulbs will replace incandescent bulbs in all households. By implementing this program, Guntur will save about 75-80 MU per annum. This project will be implemented in three moe districts besides Guntur?these are Anantapur, West Godavari and Srikakulam.
Energy Efficiency Service Limited (EESL) is implementing this project, and is funded by PGCIL, PFC, REC and NTPC. The project costs Rs 1,000 crore.
About 80,000 bulbs have already been distributed in Guntur district. According to a survey, each household in Andhra Pradesh, on an average, use two incandescent bulbs. EESL has asked the manufacturers to give long warranty period of the LED bulbs so that the consumers get motivated to shift to LED lights.
