Another village in Nagaland goes green with LED lights

June 13, 2016: It has been just few months since Fakhim village in Kiphire district Nagaland was declared to be the first LED village. And now another village, Thanamir village under Pungro Sub Division has become the second village in Nagaland to be an entirely LED light lit village.

In Fakhim, the villagers replaced their conventional 100 watt incandescent bulbs with 15 watt LED bulbs, making Fakim the first LED village in the state.

Extension of energy efficiency

With the bid to extend energy efficiency in the state, Ahozhe Sumi, District Project Officer, Department of Land Resources, Kiphire officially announced Thanamir as the second LED light village.

Wildlife Warden, Kiphire division, Kamdi Hemant Bhaskar said that the villagers promised to employ natural light, paint interior white to decrease requirement for lighting, use LED and solar charged lights rather than tungsten bulbs. Also, they pledged to switch off lights when not in use and extend the message to other people. To become an absolute LED light village, the villagers replaced each and every tungsten bulb with 15 watt LED bulb.

Bhaskar also added that the villagers demonstrated their commitment by contributing one third of the price of the LED bulbs. The LED bulbs have long lifetime of about 20 years with 8 hrs/day use, eco-friendly (no mercury, 100% recyclable) extremely energy efficient (80-90%), and can endure extreme conditions.

This entire scheme was initiated by the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change with the help of Department of Land Resources and Mumbai based NGO EcoSolutions, Power Department and District Administration.

The villagers of Thanamir said that their village is a tourist place and to be made as an absolute LED village makes it all the more admirable and this will aid a move towards a more creditable model village.

Wenyei Konyak, ADC Pungro emphasized on the extensive advantages of LED light bulbs and to maintain initiating specific development activities themselves so they can profit all the more.
