AP to retrofit 2.5 mn streetlights with LEDs by 2017 end

Jan 3, 2017: Indian state Andhra Pradesh (AP) has asked the senior officials of the Panchayat Raj & Energy I&I departments to retrofit all the existing 2.5 million conventional streetlights with LED streetlights, to provide energy conservation to rural areas.

If all streetlights in the panchayats are replaced with LED lights, the monthly electricity consumption charges will also be reduced by about 50%. It will also relieve the panchayats from the burden of operation and maintenance expenditure for 10 years.

The state chief minister has asked the concerned departments to chalk out a plan within the nest 15 days. The chief minister has directed the Energy Department officials to take the energy efficiency campaign to the grassroots level, and directed them to complete the Village LED Street Lights program by the end of 2017. AP has already attained the No.1 position in the country in installing LED lighting throughout the state.
