Jan 2, 2017: With global demand for flexible AMOLED panels rising in 2017, about 150 million flexible AMOLED panels will be shipped globally in 2017, to be used in smartphones. This is triple the shipments in 2016.
Demand may exceed supply
It is expected that global demand for flexible AMOLED panels to be used in smartphones will exceed global supply in 2017.
In 2017, Apple will launch a 5.8-inch iPhone with flexible AMOLED display, and 4.7- and 5.5-inch iPhone models with LTPS TFT-LCD panels. This is the major reason for large demand for flexible AMOLED panels in 2017.
In 2017, China-based manufacturers like Vivo, Huawei Technologies and Oppo will also launch smartphones with flexible AMOLED panels.
Due to this situation, only Apple and Samsung may be able to get sufficient supply of flexible AMOLED to meet their demand.
Vendors making efforts to meet demand
While Samsung Display dominates the global supply of AMOLED panels for smartphones, China-based EverDisplay Optronics and Visionox also supply small volumes of AMOLED.
LG, the other main panel supplier has invested $1.7 billion to build a new facility for making flexible OLED panels for smartphones. LG has also partnered with Apple, Google and Microsoft to develop out-foldable panels instead of the flexible ones. However, these will be in production only in 2018.
