Blue LEDs can reduce health risk of night-shift workers

Oct 31, 2016: Over the past few years, there has been increasing number of evidences proving that LEDs can help reduce sleepiness, while improving alertness.And now, LED lighting can prove to be a boon for night-shift workers as these energy-efficient lights can help reduce health risks while working at night, said Helen Loomes, business development directorTrilux, at Lux’s Health and Wellbeing Conference.

It is a well-known fact that night-shift workers are at higher health risks compared to day-time workers, as their work timing goes against the body’s natural clock. This disrupts their internal rhythm of genes. Further, the night workers have increased levels of heart disease, obesity and cancer.

The LED solution

Lighting however, can be used to retain a regular circadian pulse while working at night.It has been found that bright LEDs of greater than 1000 lux can suppress melatonin, the hormone that prepares the body for sleep.The production of melatonin is suppressed throughout the day with the help of natural blue-rich light environment in Trilux office, said Loome. Tiredness begins to prevail towards night when the blue light starts to wane, added Loome.

The spectral allocation at which melatonin is held at bay peaks at464nm, which is extremely strong blue and lighting makers can adjust the light output of their modules and take advantage of this information.

Blue saturation was done prior to using fluorescent phosphors, however, the result was considered to be very cold for numerous working environments. Hence, it was found that LED technology offers much finer adjustment, enabling warmer tones to be created, merging the melanopic peak within the spectrum when necessary, Loomes informed the conference.
