Delhi govt aiming 1,000 MW of solar power generation by 2020

June 8, 2016: The Delhi government has approved the Delhi Solar Energy Policy, aiming 1,000 MW of solar power generation by 2020. Satyendar Jain, power minister of Delhi said that the policy requires setting up of 1GW solar power capacity in the capital within the next five years. Also, the policy has plans to double it to 2GW by 2020.

The policy summarizes a mixture of tax breaks, mandates, regulations and incentives for the expansion of rooftop solar power in Delhi, added Jain.

The policy has been prepared in discussion with the Delhi Dialogue Commission after extensive meetings with local and international professionals, the officials informed.

A senior power department official said that majority of the Indian solar industry leaders, research institutions, residents, international experts, Union government departments, banks, NGOs, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission, consultancy organizations of Delhi participated in discussions.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi said in an official statement said to make Delhi a solar city falls under one of the 70 agenda points. The policy will assist to provide clean and green energy. Rooftop solar systems provide low gestation period, minimum transmission and distribution losses, sustainable energy and environmental benefits, added Kejriwal.

The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Management Centre (EE&REM) under the Delhi power department will be responsible for the effectual execution of this policy in discussion with the state government, suitable customers, Union government together with other states and stakeholders.

An official informed that the Indraprastha Power Generation Co. Ltd in partnership with the nodal agency will combine capacity on government rooftops besides float tender, government buildings, and ground mounted capacities and administer the whole bidding course under both third-party owned and self-owned models.

The state government has plans to facilitate capital subsidy of 30% provided by Union ministry of new & renewable energy to household customers, for whom the exercise of empanelment of retailers is under procedure, the official added.
