October 16, 2015: 2015 has witnessed increasing demand for LED lighting in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines?the six main countries of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). According to an LEDinside report, the market in these countries is estimated at US$1.5 billion, accounting for 31.3% of total market value of US$4.8 billion.
The report states that penetration of LED lighting in the six countries rose from 12% in 2012 to 31.3% in 2015. Currently, while Philips, GE and Toshiba dominate these markets, local companies and China-based companies dominate the remaining market.
Now, any LED lighting product with safety and quality certification can be sold in any ASEAN member country without customs duties and product testing. This will happen when ASEAN Economic Community will come into effect at the end of 2015, and the Agreement on the ASEAN Harmonized Electric & Electronic Equipment Regulatory Regime (AHEEERR), a pact to harmonize standards of electric & electronic equipment among ASEAN members, will come into force beginning 2016.
The report states that in 2016, local LED lighting manufacturers in the ASEAN market will set up more assembly lines to decrease outsourced production by China-based manufacturers.
