Enplas to pay $4 m to Seoul Semiconductor in patent case

By BizLED Bureau

Aug 31, 2016: After repeatedly invalidating Japanese lens manufacturer Enplas’s LED lens patents in the US and Europe, Seoul Semiconductor was granted the final infringement judgment by a US court, which ruled that Enplas has infringed upon Seoul’s backlight system and lens patents, and order to compensate.

The US Federal Court affirmed the invalidation decision of the US Patent Trial Appeal Board (PTAB) regarding Enplas’s lens patent in August 2016.

Earlier, European Patent Office also invalidated the claims of Enplas’s lens patent. Enplas patents have been invalidated or even rejected to register because of Seoul’s worldwide invalidation claims.

Finally, Seoul was given the infringement judgment by the US court which euled that Enplas infringed Seoul’s patented technology and Seoul’s patents are totally valid.

On August 16, the US court issued the final judgment which rejected Enplas’s petition and confirmed the verdict of “willful infringement” and asked Enplas to pay Seoul $4.07 as damages.

Seoul is again preparing to seek further damages and royalty in Europe and other countries against the infringers including companies that have used Enplas’s lense.
