Dec 6, 2017: Epistar would manufacture a small batch of mini LED products in 2Q18 to boost its revenue in 2018. Revealing this at the company’s investor conference, Chou Ming-Chun, General Manager, Epistar, said mini LED is likely to be mainstream in the backlight market in 2018. Epistar has been doing research on mini LED for years. Chou has stated that it is difficult to estimate when mass production of micro-LED would take off, as it still faces several technological challenges. Micro-LED will take another two to three years to actually hit the market, he said.
The company will focus on a new technologies, including backlighting, LED lighting, infrared applications, automotive lighting, and advanced digital displays to meet the growing demand in the market, Chou added.
As the Chinese LED companies have ceased price war in 2017, the Taiwanese LED firms are feeling less pressurized, and their profits have increased as well. Chou stated that Epistar will continue to shift the focus on to high-margin markets such as mini LED and IR applications.
