Nov 30, 2016: IHS says that there will be no significant growth in the global OLED TV market if the industry sticks to the existing OLED technologies that are currently applied to mass production. However, it says that the market can grow significantly if it goes with the application of soluble printing and flexible substrate technologies. If both these technologies are adopted, IHS sees OLED TV shipments to reach about 40 million units in 2023.
Soluble printing and flexible substrate technologies will help to improve productivity and can differentiate OLED from LCD.
IHS pointed out that the OLED industry may either use conventional glass substrates and thermal vapor evaporating process, or use the soluble printing method. The industry can use the application of flexible substrate process as well.
The OLED TV panel makers have been making efforts to develop technologies that can enable them to use the application of soluble printing and a flexible substrate because soluble printing method improves efficiency in the use of organic materials as it uses a soluble printing process to fabricate any organic light-emitting layer. This, in turn, can boost productivity.
Flexible substrate technology will also allow manufacturers to make TVs that can be bendable or foldable. HIS has concluded that the success of the OLED TV market depends on the application of these technologies in mass production.
