Sep 28, 2016: As outdoor lighting technologies become more efficient and less expensive, businesses and governments are investing in upgrades as a way to decrease operational costs and reduce carbon emissions. Many of today’s outdoor systems rely on basic controls such as dimming and automatic shut-offs during nighttime hours, and also take advantage of gains in light-emitting diode (LED) technology, which offers improved efficiency and quality at a lower cost. According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH, the market for outdoor lighting controls, including motion sensors, photo cells, intelligent controls, and control software, is expected to grow from $492 million in 2016 to $1.3 billion in 2025.
Fast growing market
“Recent improvements in outdoor lighting technology have created a fast-growing market for both LED lighting fixtures and lighting controls across all outdoor lighting applications,” says Allison Cross, managing consultant with Navigant Research. “Although a large percentage of the existing outdoor lighting luminaire stock is currently composed of older, less efficient technologies, it is expected that LED luminaires will quickly take over as the predominant outdoor lighting technology over the next 10 years as municipalities and other organizations continue to retrofit exterior lighting.”
Global outdoor LED lighting control market to reach $1.3 bn in 2025
According to the report, LED luminaire unit shipments for outdoor lighting systems are expected to experience a compound annual growth rate of 6.3 percent between 2016 and 2025, while all other outdoor lighting technologies will experience a decrease in unit shipments.
The report, Outdoor Lighting Systems, examines the global market for outdoor lighting and controls in roadways and highways, city parks and public areas, sports parks, commercial site lighting, outdoor parking lots, and university and college campuses. The study provides an analysis of the market issues, technological developments, and regional trends surrounding outdoor lighting systems.
Global market forecasts for luminaire and lamp unit shipments and revenue, segmented by lamp type, product type, application area, and region, extend through 2025. The forecast also includes lighting controls unit shipments and revenue for motion sensors, photocells, intelligent controls, and controls software.
