HID lamps lose market share to LED in outdoor lighting applications

March 5, 2015: Global sales of HID lamps are declining drastically as a result of the competitive threat of substitution posed by the LED lighting technology. With rising energy costs, consumers around the world are increasingly seeking to reduce energy consumption across all lighting applications.

HID has been a dominant technology as they were used in street lighting applications. However, LED lighting is now gradually cannibalizing market opportunities in this space, supported by continued research and technological advancements that promise to make LEDs an ideal alternative to HID bulbs in the future.

The growth in the HID lamps market is restrained by the technology?s energy efficiency and environmental concerns. Research, over the last couple of decades, has yielded improved lighting technologies that provide superior luminescence, while simultaneously consuming less energy. LED lighting technology is a semiconductor based lighting solution that offers significant energy efficiency, durability, and performance benefits over the HID technology.

Although HID bulbs offer higher luminous efficiency and energy efficiency than traditional incandescent bulbs, these bulbs tend to degrade more rapidly than other light sources in terms of light output and efficacy. Though originally intended for high-bay/high-ceiling and outdoor applications, use of HID bulbs spread to retail applications with the introduction of Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH) bulbs that offer superior color rendering than its predecessors.

As stated by the new market research report on High Intensity Discharge (HID) Bulbs, Asia-Pacific represents the largest market worldwide, supported by the presence of price sensitive countries in East Asia. In these countries, proliferation of LEDs is slow and gradual with HID bulbs still continuing to be used in infrastructure facilities such as stadiums, large public areas, movie theatres, roadways, pathways, parking lots, and warehouses, among others.
