How LEDs can help to make abstract light patterns in photos

May 16, 2016: Heinz-Jörg Wurzbacher and Garry Krätz of Koblenz of Germany were a lively duo of paint-with-lighters which is better known as Electrical Movements in the Dark or EMD. They created asingle long exposure wholly in the camera and edited it in a solitary photoshop layer.

EMD began by taking two 1.5 meter-long LED strips and insulating them to two plastic farming stakes of same length. With the help of suitably sized plumbers’ T-joint, they linked the two stakes in order to form something such as a propeller.

They linked the base of the T-joint to a changeable speed, mobile drill which they accumulated on a headless tripod with through a clamp.

At the end, with the battery-powered LEDs turned on, they unlocked the shutter on their tripod-mounted on the bulb setting and placed the propeller spinning at a slow speed.

In order to make the patterns, the duo turned the LED strips on and off throughout a number of spinning exposures. To space between circles, they went on to apply black tape over some of the LEDs with the aim that their output didn’t record. Finally at the completion of the exposure, a flashlight was used to paint the tunnel walls for a sense of surrounding.

  • Assemble the gear- You can shop for LED strips online. Since some of them may have only white LED, you need to gel them to create color.   • Clean up in post- Since exposures are measured in minutes, the images require noise drop. EMD uses the Nik Dfine collection from Google and also applies lens correction and exposure fixes in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC.
