July 24, 2015: The Union Government of India has launched a national LED lighting programme, which is considered to be the largest LED lighting programme in the world, in terms of energy saving. Under the program conventional street lights will be replaced with LED lights and LED bulbs will be distributed to households in 100 India cities. The program will be implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture company of PSUs of the Ministry of Power and the Government of India.
In a span of two years, 10 million street lights will be replaced and 200 million LED bulbs will be distributed to households in 100 Indian cities . According to EESL, this LED program will save of Rs 40,000 million.
The Indian government has raised its equity in EESL from Rs 900 million to Rs 5000 million. It will be further raised to Rs 10,000 million by the middle of next financial year. EESL will also raise loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Asian Development Bank and some German and French banks. EESL has already borrowed from a German bank at a low interest.
EESL Managing Director Saurabh Kumar said that the Visakhapatnam model of benefit-sharing will be followed under this program. The investment on streetlights will be about at Rs 50,000 million and will lead to a savings of 1.7 billion units a year. The distribution of 200 million LED bulbs to households will save 6 billion units. This LED lighting program will also boost the Indian government?s ?Make in India? campaign. In India, 100 companies make LED lights and the LED streetlights and LED bulbs will be procured from these companies. The state governments will select the cities. In the city of Srikakulam, distribution of LED bulbs has already started, Saurabh Kumar said at an event in Vishakapatnam.
