India to change 1 billion light points with LEDs

August 6, 2015: In India, about 1 billion traditional light points will be converted into energy efficient LED bulb points in three year.

After attending the Clean Energy Ministerial held in Mexico in May, Director General of Bureau of Energy Efficiency Ajay Mathur said 23 countries that attended the ministerial agreed to work towards changing 10 billion light points to energy efficient LED bulbs.

India has also decided to convert 1 billion light points with energy efficient LED bulbs in the next three years.

Mathur said this initiative would give business opportunity to the LED manufacturers as it will give the opportunity to manufacture more LED bulbs and increase their production capacity, which, in turn, would bring down the prices of LED bulbs. The initiative will also give export opportunities for the Indian LED bulb manufacturers, Mathur said.

  1. Ten billion lights is a lot of lights. It’s true to say that the more LED bulbs that get used the cheaper they will become. When low voltage dichroic lamps were first introduced they were extremely expensive. Then, over the following five to ten years they became very affordable.
