Mar 7, 2016: While LED lights are becoming smarter and intelligent, worldwide, more and more governments are adopting and experimenting with these intelligent and smart lighting systems in their cities to reduce electricity costs as well as CO2 emissions. Not only that, with intelligent LED lights controlled remotely, these cities are becoming ?smart cities?.
Future smart applications of LED lighting systems
Intelligent LED street lighting systems to control urban services. According to industry experts, soon street lights worldwide will become LED street lights, and these lights will form the basis of parking control, municipal networks, traffic flow and waste management. Experts also believe that smat and intelligent LED lighting systems will become a part of the multifunctional communications networks in “smart city.”
Till now, LED lights were used to illuminate the streets and dark areas, but soon LED street lights will play many new functions. They will inform the garbage collection centres when the neighbourhood garbage bins need to be cleaned; they will inform the traffic control room about any changes noticed in the traffic flow, or about an accident that takes place on the road. In short, LED street lighting will become a major part of the urban services.
How this vision can become reality
This vision will soon become reality with the help of Internet of Things (IoT); machine-to-machine (M2M) communication; and automatic data exchange between different devices in the network. IoT will make every object and location connected to each other like cars, street lights, car parks, etc. All these objects and places will be able to measure different parameters in their surroundings and digitize the challenges they face in a daily life like finding a parking place.
Role of street lights in making cities smarter
In this concept of ‘smart cities’, LED street lights will play a major role. It will help to reduce costs of energy consumption and maintenance. Not only that?worldwide, in many cities, defective street lights to lead about 20% of the citizens? complaints, but smart and intelligent street lighting systems can automatically start a repair process by detecting the defect lights, informing the service centres, and then monitoring the replaced street lights again?even before any complaints get registered.
Awareness programmes for smart lighting systems
Although intelligent and smart LED lighting systems are already in the market for some time now, many cities have not yet noticed them. Hence, these systems have not yet come into widespread adoption. Majority of the cities worldwide are not aware that LED street lighting can become the backbone of a well networked city and that there can be breakthrough in many urban services. However, besides private sector companies, organisations like European Union (EU) are promoting the digitization of urban services and role of smart LED lighting systems.
European Commission has already started a programme called European Innovation Partnerships on Smart Cities and Communities (EIP SCC), under which, till 2020, it will fund about ?80 million ($103.5 million).
What is required to make smart lighting systems?
In order to do multifunctional tasks, an intelligent lighting system, needs to meet certain requirements. Firstly, it needs to meet the requirement of the demands of a smart city. The LED street lights need to be equipped with electronic devices that have to be placed either in a small box attached to a street light or may be it needs to be fitted inside the light fixture. The strret light manufacturer can also integrate the hardware with the street light. These electronically equipped street lights should then be integrated into a smart network. Then it needs to be fitted to a mobile communication gateway to exchange data across the network. These can either be attached to the lamp posts or attached to the power distribution grids.
