Apr 21, 2017: 3D sensing technology is emerging fast as its applications areas are increasing. As high-end smartphones are adopting 3D sensing technology, TrendForce estimates that the global market for IR sensor modules for mobile devices will touch US$145 million in 2017.
3D sensing solution requires an RGB camera module, an infrared (IR) sensor module that uses vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) as a light source.
It is anticipated that future smartphones will feature facial recognition based on IR sensing technology. Jason Tsai, TrendForce’s wearable analyst, pointed out that 3D facial recognition feature on smartphones will not match digitally created 3D models of human faces; instead it will match them with reference models in databases.
Tsai said that smartphone manufacturers are likely to enhance the existing 2D facial recognition solutions with 3D sensing in order to have a 3D facial recognition feature. Therefore, 3D sensing will support technology that would help to determine whether the face that is being recorded comes from a real living person.
3D sensing can also strengthen user security by making the facial recognition function of the device more accurate. 3D sensing will ensure that the smartphone can recognize the facial image that the camera has captured of the real living person. However, Tsai pointed out that 3D sensing components will increase hardware cost for smartphone makers.
