September 21, 2014: After the success of a trial installation of 300 LED streetlights in Kolkata, this energy saving drive will be carried across the entire city soon. In this project 3 lakh LED streetlights will be installed in various areas of Kolkata.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and The Climate Group (TCG), an international NGO, are in talks to implement this project next year.
KMC had participated in a global trial of LED outdoor lighting organised by TCG in 2011-2012 and had installed 300 LED streetlights. This project had become quite successful.
These 300 LED streetlights replaced the high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps previously used in the areas where the drive was launched, and 52% of energy was saved. The cost of the project was Rs.1.32 crore. The drive was co-funded by the power ministry, through the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, and the KMC.
