April 16, 2015: LED lights lead to higher productivity and profits in industrial units. A Michigan University study done in 25 garment factories in Bangalore, India, has stated that by using LED lights in industrial facilities a huge amount of energy can be saved, productivity of the workers can be enhanced, which will eventually lead to higher profits. The study was conducted from 2010-13.

LEDs enhance workers? health

LEDs generate less heat than traditional lights, hence they keep the factory cooler. If workers are more comfortable in their workplace, their productivity will go up and, hence, they will be less likely to be absent from work?a major problem for employers, the study said.

“Heat disables the body’s capacity to exert and work, so the workers fail to complete production targets,” said assistant professor at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business and one of the authors of the study Achyuta Adhvaryu. “LEDs not only enhance productivity but also cut down energy consumption,” he said.

In developing countries, factory owners find it challenging to keep the environment cooler and add to climate change campaign. In developing countries, the environments of these factories are not better off than those of the developing nations, the report said.

Installation cost Vs energy savings

The researchers studied the benefits of LED lights in the factories for over four years. They found that LED lights will cost about $6,300 to install, and the energy savings will be about $3,000 per year. The garment factories that were studied not air conditioned and had hundreds of people work on machines that ran constantly in buildings with multiple stories. According to the study, increased profits from efficiency gains by of the workers are more stark?an increase of $41 per day for each factory, or nearly $13,000 per factory per year.
