February 16, 2015: LED streetlights are energy efficient and even brighter than the traditional street lights. But poor quality of luminaires and inefficient installations can create negative results leading to dark corners on the road.
This has happened in the Indian city of Mumbai. After the famous Marine Drive in Mumbai was lit with LED lights, residents have complained that certain dark spots on the road have been created and the lighting did not cover the promenade and side walk of the area.
Although, the lights brightness was supposed to be 60 lux level, it did not spread out in the same way as traditional street lights did.
“There are dark spots between two LED light poles and the design lacks uniformity,” said BEST Chairman Ashok Dhudwadkar. “The proposal to put up lights didn’t come up in front of the BEST committee for an NOC. But the BMC is planning to change all the street lights with LED lights in a year,? he added.
LEDs are directional light source, and hence choosing the right type of omnidirectional LEDs for street lighting is essential, which failed in this case.
An illumination survey of the new white LED lights on Marine Drive have revealed that while the lights are bright enough, they leave a lot of dark spots on the road and do not extend to the promenade and the sidewalk.
The survey results showed that while the lux level was 60, which is double the prescribed level for the A-1 Type I Marine Drive road, the white lights did not spread out as much as the old yellow sodium vapour lights.
Most of the crowded part of Marine Drive is in darkness, which is posing safety risk for the pedestrians.
