November 22, 2014: ON Semiconductor launched LED drivers and LED controllers for automotive lighting applications. The advanced NCV78763 smart power ballast and LED driver with dual channel provides an automotive lighting solution with a single chip that drives two LEDs strings of up to 60 volts (V). It can support DC current of 1.6 amperes (A) on each output. A current-mode voltage booster controller is built-in that helps input current filtering. An in-built pulse-width modulated (PWM) dimming function is also included that covers frequencies up to 4 kilohertz (kHz).
These are suitable for front lighting applications, and can be employed in low beam, high beam, turn indicator, fog and daytime running lights, and static cornering. For every LED channel there is a buck switch output, which can configure the output current and voltage of specific applications.
If more than two LED channels are required for one lighting module, then multiple NCV78763 devices can be combined together. Due to serial peripheral interface (SPI), this solution is very flexible, and allow flexibility in design so that more LED strings can be utilized. NCV78763 also supports different operating frequencies and provides specification of smaller inductors. It helps to reduce bill of materials costs.
ON Semiconductor also launched NCV7691 current controller for automotive LED lamps. This integrated pre-driver contains PWM and diagnostic capabilities, battery connection and negative temperature coefficient (NTC) input in one chip. Its applications are center high-mounted stop lamps, automotive rear combination lamps, and day-time running lights. The NCV78763 is offered in three variants?5mm x 5mm QFN-32, 7mm x 7mm QFN-32 and 36-pin SSOP, with unit prices starting at $1.85 US$ for 5K unit quantities.
