February 11, 2015: US-based lighting systems manufacturer Orion Energy Systems has announcement that it will lay off 40 employees of the lighting systems plant, administrative offices and technology center on Woodland Drive.
The company is winding an old business and developing a new one, hence different set of people are required for different type of work, the company said. Orion?s new business will not require 203 employees, hence the lay off, the company said.
Orion’s legacy business (fluorescent) has been overtaken by LED business, with sales for LED products this fiscal quarter compared to last year for the technology increasing a whopping 807%? from $1.4 million to $12.7 million. Orion will now focus exclusively on LED products within 12 months causing a fundamental transition with multiple major ramifications. However, Orion will provide financial and other assistance to these employees.
Orion CEO John Scribante said the Manitowoc company will develop LED products for industrial and commercial applications. “We are still in the lighting business but the light source has more in common with TV sets than the incandescent bulb,” Scribante said in a press conference.
