Dec 16, 2016: The third-quarter sales of flexible OLED screens of Samsung Display, the display-making unit of Samsung group, exceeded US$1 billion. It was the first time that the company’s quarterly sales of flexible OLED screens surpassed $1 billion.
In fact, if we compare this sales figure with the third-quarter earlier, then this year’s third-quarter sales of Samsung Display’s flexible OLED screens had jumped by 68.7%.
Samsung Display takes No. 1 slot
With the sales of its small and medium-sized flexible OLED screens for smartphones and other wearable gadgets significantly increasing, Samsung Display took the first position for the third quarter with a market share of 31.8%.
According to data by IHS Markit, Samsung Display achieved sales of $3.66 billion in total in the small and medium-sized display market for the third quarter.
Japan Display took the second position with a market share of 15.4% for the quarter, followed by LG Display with 13.1%.
Samsung Display is the only panel manufacturer in the world that produces sixth-generation flexible OLED panels.
Demand for flexible OLED screens
Demand for flexible OLED screens has been growing globally, as smartphone makers are increasingly looking for devices that can be folded.
According to IHS Markit, the global market for flexible OLED screens will grow to $12.8 billion by 2018, from an estimate of $3.9 billion in 2016. The market is expected to grow to $18.9 billion by 2020, with an average annual growth rate of 48.6%.
