Apr 26, 2016: In a bid to create inroads into each other’s home turfs, Samsung & LG are set to completely change their OLED display business plans for 2016. Samsung Display in particular is looking forward to make a considerable investment in OLED TV panels. On the other hand, LG Display will be investing more in smaller OLED panels with the view to supply OLEDs to Apple for their upcoming iPhone.
Samsung Display is likely to install huge OLED panel manufacturing equipment in Tangjeong, South Chungcheong Province by the end of 2016, according to industry sources.
The sources also revealed that the primary investment will be between two trillion won to three trillion won considering factors like financial resources accessibility and yield steadiness. At present, Samsung Display is carrying out final tests on eighth-generation OLED panel manufacture technology to that end, the industry sources added.
Samsung & LG step into new business plans for OLED display
Alternatively, LG Display is contemplating over an added investment in the mobile OLED panel market. As far as small-sized display panels is concerned LG Display had always concentrated on LCD prior to setting up flexible OLED panel manufacture lines in Gumi in 2015 at a venture of 1.5 trillion won.
Of late, LG Display decided to build OLED panel production lines in Paju by investing 10 trillion won, which is planned to take in those for small-sized flexible panels. Currently, Samsung Display is demonstrating around 95% of the global mobile OLED panel market, which is expected to grow to US$25 billion in size in 2016.
LG Display is looking forward to boost its share in the market since Apple and Chinese smartphone manufacturers are shifting their business strategies with Huawei and Xiaomi starting to develop smartphones equipped with OLED panels.
Samsung Display’s OLED panels are being extensively used by Chinese smartphone manufacturers and it is expected that Apple will be using Samsung Display’s OLED panels for its iPhone, thus indicating that LG Display should come up with good business strategies at the earliest.
