Nov 9, 2015: Planar Systems Inc. has unveiled the Planar LookThru OLED transparent display, claiming to have created a new category for see-through displays and achieving the vision of science fiction filmmakers.
This first-of-its-kind Planar LookThru OLED transparent display was demonstrated for the first time at the Xlab 2015 Conference, presented by the Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD), utilizing Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology to eliminate the need for a backlight or enclosure.
Transparent OLED technology removes one of the major hurdles to transparent LCD Display adoption by making it possible to create a true see-through installations unobstructed by enclosures behind the displays.
This offering by Planar?s transparent OLED creates new applications for display, which was not possible so far, claims Jennifer Davis, vice president of marketing and product strategy at Planar Systems.
This display allows users to view video content, digital images and text on a virtually frameless glass display and at the same time enables designers to overlay this content onto real objects or scenes that sit behind the glass.
The 55-inch Planar LookThru OLED transparent display is self-emissive and has brilliant picture quality, exceptional contrast and wide viewing angles. When it is paired with a Planar image processing solution, the display can be tiled to create large and impactful video wall installations.
It is ideal for a broad range of applications including retail, corporate and museum settings. The display can be integrated into any environment in which glass is used, like conference rooms, counters, room dividers, ticket booths, museum exhibits, and retail fixtures.
