The company expects to ramp up its capacity for LED sapphire substrate manufacturing to attain a about 35 million units per year.

SemiTek will invest about RMB 1 billion for the construction, which will start in September 2017. The fab will be built over a total area of 50,000 sq m.

Lanjing Technology will become one one of the biggest sapphire substrate suppliers by the time the new fab begins to operate.

Almost all top LED suppliers like Nichia, Osram Opto, Lumileds, Seoul Semiconductor, Epistar and San’an use sapphire wafers. The high availability of low-cost sapphire, enables inexpensive LEDs to be produced. Sapphire is expected to remain the a leader, when it comes to substrates used to make LEDs.
