Seoul Semiconductor’s operational profits rise but sales drop in Q3

Nov 3, 2016: Korea-based leading LED manufacturer Seoul Semiconductor, has hit US$17.37 million in operating profits and US$214.32 million in sales in the third quarter of 2016, according to the company.

The sales figure fell 11.2% from the same quarter in 2015 when the company hit the highest quarterly sales. However, it raised 5.7% from the earlier quarter. Further, the operating profits fell 14.7%as compared to 2015, but increased to a whopping 102.8% from the second quarter, considerably improving profitability.

Improved LED sales

Seoul Semiconductor failed to reach its sales target for the third quarter because of the decreasing exchange rate and slow sales of general lights. However, the sales of LEDs, developed by its own technology like Wicop and Acrich, were maintained the same level of the earlier quarter. In addition, the the sales of UCD and Wicop LEDs increased from the second quarter.

For the automobile segment, the sales of head lamps along with internal and external LEDs revealed a smooth growth due to the boost in sales of high power products.The operating profits significantly improved from the earlier quarter due to increasing sales of high value added products, and the company’s extensive efforts for cost reduction.

The use of Wicop, which is known as one of the ideal LED innovations consisting of fluorescent substances and LED chips, has also been increased to entire LED sectors to IT, automobile and lamp, hence improving overall profitability.

Acrich, the world’s leading LED that operates on direct current and, also helped to improve the rate of return in the lighting segment, leading to improvements in operating profits.
