July 25, 2015: Demand for flexible OLED panels may increase significantly in 2015 as more smartphones and wearable devices with flexible OLED displays are being launched.
According to industry reports, the global OLED panel market is projected to grow at an annual average growth rate of 30% over the next five years to reach a market worth $46 billion by 2020.
In order to meet the increasing demands for OLED panels, Samsung Display and LG Display are considering expansion in their production, and recently Samsung has announced that it will invest $3.6 billion (4 trillion won) into OLED production line to manufacture OLED panels. This new production line will be established to make OLED displays of medium and small-sized, for applications like smartphones and other consumer electronics devices.
It is also reported that LG Display will invest about 1.2 trillion won in 2015 to expand its capacity of its existing large panel OLED production line.
Soon a number of new smartphones will be launched by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics which will feature flexible OLED displays. In fact, LG has already launched its new curved smartphone G Flex 2, and Samsung also plans to launch its Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge at the MWC 2015 in Spain in March 2015.
Wearable devices will add to the boost
In addition to the smartphones, an increasing number of wearable devices like smartwatches are also being launched with flexible OLED panels. LG will unveil a sequel to G Watch R and Samsung will also launch smartwatch Orbis.
