April 1, 2015: LED lighting market in India is still at its nascent stage. However, the market is expected to gain significant momentum, in the coming years with increasing energy demand-supply gap, government initiatives, growing awareness and declining prices of LEDs.
According to Frost & Sullivan (F&S), the Indian LED market may grow over US$ 1 billion in the next four years. The market will witness a growth rate of more than 40% till 2016. F&S has also predicted that the LED lighting market in India will move towards high quality, adaptable lighting with more efficient output. The market will witness a convergence scenario with other technology areas like wireless sensors and networks, augmented reality, and flexible electronics. This will shift emphasis to the lighting system as a whole. To make this scenario a reality, the manufacturers of LED lighting play a major role. Here we list out the major LED lighting brands alphabetically.
Crompton Greaves Ltd has entered into a technology licensing agreement with Bridgelux, a solid state lighting pioneer based in USA, for the company?s LED light engine, optics and luminaire expertise. This agreement will enable CG to deliver LED lighting products for different sectors. CG claims to command 30% market share in India?s streetlighting, which is rapidly adopting LED technology. Bridgelux will also enable CG?s entry into the premium and retail indoor LED lighting product segment.
Dynel is the lighting division and the LED brand of Continental Device India Ltd (CDIL), a pioneer and a world class manufacturer of silicon semiconductor chips and devices since 1964. This division was announced in August 2013 with the launch of LED emergency light under the brand name DyneL. CDIL also manufactures LED bulbs, tubelights and downlights?all under the brand DyneL. The company plans to establish its presence in the LED market on the back of its rich technology heritage, moulding capabilities, strong brand recognition in the Indian market and a broad distribution network. NTL Electronics India Ltd and Lemnis Lighting BV have come together to operate as an independent joint venture company called NTL Lemnis. Headquartered in the Netherlands, a vertically integrated organisation, it offers complete LED lighting solutions to its end consumers in Europe, India and Africa. NTL Lemnis? Pharox range of LED lighting solutions specially target Indian audience. It focuses on industries such as retail, IT, hospitality and healthcare.

It offers a huge collection of LED products in various categories, which are made with most advanced and innovative technology across offices, retail stores, hospitals, industries, commercial establishments and hotels. It has also created over 100 green buildings across India. Around 90 per cent of the revenue of Philips Lighting India comes from products and solutions which are designed and manufactured in India for the Indian market. It claims to have a share of 30% in the lighting market of India.
Reiz Electrocontrols Pvt Ltd entered the LED lighting market at a time when no one else did, and today, it is a leading manufacturer in the LED segment. While Reiz?s head office is located in New Delhi, its manufacturing plant is situated at Gurgaon where the company manufactures a wide range of high-quality LED outdoor luminaires, indoor lights, electronic LED modules and LED drivers. One factory is especially dedicated towards the integration of electronic, optical and thermal engineering into the finished LED luminaire.
Surya Roshni, which has recently ventured into the LED lighting business, aims a turnover of Rs 1,800 crore from its lighting division in the next four years. Surya Roshni had a revenue of Rs 1,125.77 crore from the lighting segment as on the financial year ended March 31, 2014. The company has already invested Rs 20 crore in R&D for LED and plans to put Rs 25 crore more within a year. Surya Roshni is expecting sales of about Rs 150 crore ending the current FY from its LED segment. It has created facilities at its Kashipur and Gwalior plants for manufacturing LED products. At present, all major products such as LED bulbs, downlights, streetlights are manufactured domestically.
Toshiba International Corporation has signed a marketing and distribution agreement with San Antonio-based Green Star LED, which will produce under the Toshiba brand for and sell in India as well through its network. Toshiba has been a leader in the Japanese lighting industry for over 125 years but its entry into the Indian market has been much more recent. Its offering has so far been primarily focused on lamps and other indoor lighting and will now count on Green Star?s line of outdoor and indoor high power LED fixtures.
Wipro Lighting, a part of Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting Group, was started in 1992 to manufacture and market lighting products. In line with the lighting trends, it later launched a wide variety of LED lights for the domestic, commercial and institutional segments. Wipro LED lights are designed and tested extensively for Indian conditions.
